The Nordic countries must respond jointly to Trump’s statements on Greenland

U.S. President Donald Trump has once again suggested that Greenland should belong to the United States. These remarks are serious and require a clear response from the Nordic countries, says Jouni Ovaska, Chair of the Centre Group in the Nordic Council.

Ovaska emphasizes that Greenland’s security is already guaranteed through NATO and the commitments of the Nordic countries. Greenland’s self-government and its right to self-determination are indisputable.

He proposes a joint Arctic security meeting with Nordic, Canadian, and U.S. ministers to strengthen the territorial integrity of Greenland and Denmark. The entire Arctic region must be viewed as a strategic whole.

“Greenland’s status is not negotiable. The Nordic countries and Canada should provide binding security guarantees and jointly reinforce NATO’s Arctic dimension. Swift action is needed,” Ovaska says.
